Join the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition for an afternoon at the “Discotech” (DISCOvering TECHnology.) This event is free and all ages are welcome. Learn more about the impact and possibilities of media and technology within our homes and communities. Take part in numerous hands-on workshops about the Internet, useful and free software, electronics, alternative energy, making your own music and many other interactive activities.
Seven Makerspace Makers and Facilitators received the “Spirit of Detroit” award for sharing their knowledge and experiences with alternative energy technologies such as solar cells and wind turbines. During the summer, the Makerspace participated in several events where we set up fun, hands-on “make your own” exhibits to help demystify the operation and usefulness of these technologies.
- East Side People’s Festival
- Maker Faire Detroit 2011
- MEBCA Day Celebration
- Detroit Youth Green Economy Summit
Thank you to Councilman Ken Cockrel and Roshani Dantas from the Detroit City Council Green Task Force for helping make all of this happen! It means so much to our makers to be recognized for all their hard work.
Congratulations to our first three Earn-A-Bike participants on successfully completing all the requirements! The next step for these fine makers is to join the 3rd Annual Safe Streets Youth Ride at the Hub of Detroit.
Summer session at the Makerspace is almost at a close and the makers are busy getting all their projects done. This past week in the Icey Treat / Bike Trailers AwesomeShop we started to build the actual bike trailers. First we went over basic measurement and then how to use basic power tools.
Thank you so much to all who came out to Maker Faire Detroit to help us with the workshops and show people what the Makerspace has been up to!!
It was also a blast to share a tent with our friends over at OmniCorpDetroit. Their impressive set up of robots, bikes and mind controlled devices really showed how far you can take making when you get a group of talented people together.
Hope to see you all next year!!
Come join the Makerspace at Maker Faire Detroit! We will be there with our friends from OmniCorpDetroit showing people how to build their own simple wind turbines as well as short demos on the use of solar cells.
We started a new round of AwesomeShops this week! The first two classes are “AwesomeShop: Electronic Brains” and “AwesomeShop: Icy Treat Bike Trailers”. This week in AwesomeShop: Icy Treat Bike Trailers we made sketch books from scratch. With these, makers will design and draft there very own bike trailer, and creat their very own icy treat resipies.

Some makers took the custom made sketch books to a hole new level, for example, Melody just kept gluing electronics to hers and it turned out sweet!
